The Fisheries Sector-The NAFPTA Component

The fisheries sector is broad and fish processing and distribution forms a key component of the sector. Fish processing ensures that fresh fish is preserved in the safest and most hygienic state until it reaches the end user (the consumer). Fish is traditionally preserved by smoking and drying in the sun (salted and none-salted). In Ghana and most African countries traditional fish processing is carried out predominantly by women. Fish trading and distribution is aslo largely handled by women.

The fish processing methods over the years have seen continues improvements which has led to improved fish handling and processing and improved hygiene standards.
NAFTA with the help of our partners seek to standardized the improved fish processing methods across all fish processing areas in Ghana.
Our members are encouraged to readily pass on the knowledge of the new fish processing methods to other woman fish processors who are not members of NAFPTA or are still using the old processing and handling methods.

NAFPTA's main resounding goal is to enshrine in our members the importance of maintaining hygienic fish handling and processing standards in our members in order to deliver time and time again the same quality and safe for human consumption fresh or processed fish.
The welfare and profitability of the businesses of the members of NAFPTA is closely monitored. To encourage increased member enrolment, NAFTPA must be seen to be an association that adds value to every single member. We embark on membership drives periodically and encourage members to spread the word of the benefits members of NAFPTA enjoy.
