National Fish Festival 2023

The fourth edition of the National Fish Festival has been held at Independence Square in Greater Accra Region serving as an exhibition platform for fish products, fishing and aquaculture inputs, as well as an opportunity for participants to buy fresh and processed fish from a fish market.

The National Fish Festival was two –day event, from Mon. 20th - Tue. 21st November, 2023.

was themed: “Developing Ghana’s Blue Economy for Sustainable Fisheries Management and National Development”.

It focused on emphazing the crucial role the fisheries sector played in the economic development of the country.

ESSENTIALS
The Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Moses Anim, said the fish festival was part of activities to mark the  international world fish day celebration - 2023.

He aslo said it serves as a platform to educate the public on aquaculture and marine fisheries, foster learning and networking, promote business partnerships among value chain actors.

Speaking at the forum, He also said the festival is to showcase the progress of the sector, its challenges and opportunities.

Challenges/Difficulties

The President of National Fish Processors and Traders Association (NAFPTA), Regina Solomon ( middle in line ) talked of achievements in fisheries sector such as reduction of child labour and address on post harvest loses through interventions which make it possible for fish processors to add value to their products, though there are challenges or difficulties which needs to be addressed as well.

She stated that "All is not well There are no fish."
She said fishermen do not get fish when they go fishing.
She stressed on fishers losing their lives at the four fishing costal regions in the county, Ghana.                                                                  
She elaborated more on illegal fishing practices such as fishing with light, use of chemicals, not submitting of fish data to the fisheries commission and throwing bycatch into the sea.

The National President,
Madam Solomon called for stringent enforcement of the fisheries laws to save the country's ( Ghana) fishing industry from a fall back.

She urged the Ministry of Fisheries and the Fisheries Commission to come out with the number of women serving on premix committees in the various fishing committees.

The Chairman of the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council, Nana Jojo Solomon, also urged the government to introduce police visibility in communities where illegal fishing was ongoing.

Awards presented to NAFPTA women, qualified as a certified fish processors under the Safe Fish Certification and Licensing Scheme ( SFCLS). The Fisheries Commission really recognises all their inputs and efforts in the fishing industry.
